Our mission

Less Than Half is on a mission to educate culturally engaged women to champion gender equity in the art world by making art collecting accessible and impactful. The art world you’re seeing today and in history is less than half the picturE

For centuries, the art world has celebrated and elevated a narrow slice of voices, often leaving women and marginalized artists in the shadows. An art world that doesn’t acknowledge the works of women artists and artists of color is not only an inequitable one, but one that ultimately harms art’s higher purpose: to expand our understanding of the world through seeing.

There is a clear need for equity in art

  • JUST 15%

of museum collections in the US feature work by women artists

  • ONLY 3%

of items for sale at art auctions are created by women

  • ABOUT 70%

of MFA graduates are women, yet they remain underrepresented in the art world

OUR APPROACH: COURSES, COMMUNITY & CELEBRATION

  • Membership

Community, events, salons, and certifications for Matrons of the Arts and allies

  • Courses

Self-paced digital courses that give women the confidence to explore and collect art

  • Events

Events showcasing women artists, inspired by the Matronage philosophy.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MEMBER OF LESS THAN HALF

You’re here because you want to get more involved in the art world, right? Perfect—because the art community has some catching up to do, and we need all hands on deck.

You may have seen me before—the passive nude in paintings from Titian to Manet—but it’s the 21st century! I’ve marched out of the museum to take things into my own hands. I’ve built a collective of culturally-engaged women and allies, called Matrons of the Arts, and we want you to join us.

  • “I have an art degree and loved taking art history classes. I (embarrassingly) never noticed that I wasn’t even learning about women in those classes, so the things I’ve learned from Hall have been invigorating, inspiring and exciting. I always picture the emoji with the exploding head when I learn something from her!”

matronage (n.) -

when women holistically support the work and careers of women artists, thinking beyond just instances of commercial exchange and considering a woman artist’s long-term well-being, both professionally and personally.

Collecting Women Artists Isn’t Charity. It’s Impact Investing.

No, we’re not a nonprofit, and here’s why: Collecting women artists isn’t about charity—it’s about changing the art world from the inside out. By investing in the work of women artists, you’re supporting a movement that values their contributions, talent, and influence as integral to our culture.

meet the founder

Hall W. Rockefeller is the founder of Less Than Half, an organization born from her passion for uncovering and celebrating the work of women artists. For Hall, discovering a new woman artist and immersing herself in the depth of her work is thrilling on a profound level. She wants others to feel that same excitement—the heart-racing wonder she experiences when she opens an artist’s biography or steps into an exhibition of someone previously unknown.

Through Less Than Half, Hall is dedicated to helping others find those how did I miss this?! moments and the thrill of encountering the worlds created by women artists who deserve the spotlight.

Hall holds a BA from Yale and an MA from the Courtauld Institute, both in the history of art. She has lectured at the National Arts Club (NY), Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and Yale (as a Traphagen speaker), and has spoken on panels at the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) Art Fair, Future Fair, and countless galleries. A writer as well, Hall’s work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, BOMB, Sculpture, The Brooklyn Rail, and Hyperallergic, where she regularly brings her feminist perspective to contemporary art news.
